Subterráneo was originally a Spanish conquistador. While in South America, he began searching for the Fountain of Youth. After an accident, he was badly injured, and fell down a chasm, where he found the Subterrestrials. They were peaceful, took him in, and cared for him. Over time he started to mutate due to the substances in the water, which kept him alive. Even though he could never return to the mortal world, he was still grateful. He taught them the arts of civilization and war. In turn, their shaman taught him how to manipulate the Earth to do his bidding. Eventually he became leader and sought to control the world.
